Program Description:
Project Abroad 2

About
Projects Abroad is one of the largest volunteer abroad organizations in the world. Founded in 1992, we send 10,000 people abroad each year on a variety of service projects and internships overseas. All participants receive unparalleled in-country support from our full-time, professional staff to ensure that the experience is safe, worthwhile and fun.

Volunteer or intern abroad in Africa, Asia, Europe, or Latin America. We offer overseas voluntary work placements including teaching, care, conservation & environment, medicine & healthcare, journalism, law & human rights, international development, business, and more.

Mission and Values
Our Mission
Our mission is to encourage young people to volunteer for worthwhile work in developing countries. We expect that doing this kind of voluntary work will in time become the norm. As more and more people join us, we aim to create a multi-national community with a passion to serve, to learn, to understand, to teach, to inspire, and to be inspired.

Our Values
CONTRIBUTION: We believe in helping where help is needed, even in far-away places, whether it is needed by an individual, an organization, an environmental project, or an entire community; we respond to need as effectively as we can with our abilities and our resources.

COMPANY: We believe that the most efficient way to organize people and resources for our activities is through a for-profit company; it allows for the pooling of resources and the dispersal of risk, and it encourages innovation.

COMMUNITY: We believe that our colleagues, our volunteers, and our partners, who make up our multi-national community, determine our success. We recognize that each individual has a unique ability to contribute, which we must nurture.

CULTURE: We believe in the value of cultural exchange between young people from different communities; such exchange helps to create a world with greater mutual respect and understanding.

Medical Elective Abroad
Projects Abroad offers a wide variety of international Medical Elective placements overseas in developing countries. These are individualized to specifically to meet the academic needs of students in medical school and other degree programs training to be doctors, nurses, dentists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and midwives.

We have over 20 years of experience collaborating with medical professionals abroad. We will provide you with a placement that not only meets your elective requirements but also gives you a complete and rewarding experience of the country in which you are based. You will be assigned a qualified supervisor who is there to provide support and guidance throughout your placement. We arrange your accommodation, meals, and insurance, and have strong in-country support to make sure your time abroad runs as smoothly as possible

Projects Abroad can offer elective placement that not only meets your preferences for specific specialties, but also the chance to make a difference in a developing country that is a new and exciting backdrop to your studies.

If you are not a medical student or an elective placement is not a required part of your studies, please visit our Medicine & Healthcare internships page.

Volunteer Medical Electives Abroad

In developing countries, students doing electives will encounter diseases and conditions that are rarely seen in North America, such as malaria, leprosy, and polio. Furthermore, due to a lack of both general health education and money to pay for treatment, the cases tend to be far more advanced than you would normally see in hospitals here.

Many of our elective students also have the opportunity to take part in extra activities such as attending workshops, outreach programs, and seminars with other medical students. This depends on the country and placement you choose.

Locations
Projects Abroad provides students with a plethora of location options. From single trips, to combination destinations, Projects Abroad have numerous opportunities for students.  Please visit the Volunteer Destination section of the website to see all available choices.

Applications: Is there a deadline?
Projects Abroad accepts applications on a rolling basis, so there is no fixed deadline for your application. However, we encourage you to apply as early as possible once you have decided what you want to do and when you want to leave. This is because:
  • Some destinations and projects require at least three months to process an application, arrange for visas, and advise you properly on how to prepare. Other countries can be processed in as little as three weeks.
  • Having more time to prepare makes it easier for you to fundraise, and for us to advise you on preparations for your trip. It also gives you time to talk to us about tailoring your program to your interests and preferences before you arrive at your placement.
  • Whenever you are thinking of traveling, we encourage you to apply as far in advance as possible, especially if you are planning on traveling over the summer. To help ensure that your application process goes as smoothly as possibly, please see our application tips.
For a broad overview of the application process, please review the How it Works: Getting Started section of the website.
